Venados Running Club was founded in 1981 by Pablo & friends in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago. The club was founded as a way to connect like-minded neighborhood runners to share miles & maybe a few beers. At the time, the only other SouthSide run club was Rainbow Runners as Pablo recalls.
The club ran strong into the late 90s & in the early 2000s, Enrique & his Dad, Pops (OG Venado), took over the club. Together, they continued to welcome runners of all ages and backgrounds who enjoy the sport of running in the neighborhood. Over the years, Margaret, Enrique, & Pops organized weekly community runs, cheer zones, shakeout runs/events, & more. In 2017, Margaret founded the kids run club branch of Venados.
In 2022, the torch of run club captain was passed down to Lucy & Ruby, who had been a part of the Venados community since 2012. To Lucy & Ruby, being a part of Venados means being a part of a legacy that has inspired runners and community members for generations.
Venados Running Club meets every Wednesday at 7:00 pm for weekly community runs at Monochrome Brewery (2102 S Carpenter St, Chicago, IL 60608 ). Run options are 3 or 5 miles, all paces & people are welcome.
Venados Running Club meets for group runs all year & each season we have several team races and club socials. Check our calendar for upcoming events!
